It really has been a while since I played FFOF, I guess I got disoriented after our short trip to Cebu and with school opening activities. But I am happy to be back and besides I really like the questions of Valerie (valmg2) so that somehow I can “parade” something that is Filipino or Asian.
1. What is one food that is grown, produced or made near where you live.

Durian is grown in most southeast asian countries including here in Davao City. It is said to be the king of the fruits because it announces itself so strongly with its pungent smell. But it taste SO heavenly . . . really!! Perhaps it’s one of the few fruits that you need to have an “adjustment” period with.
2. What is one food from another location that you haven’t had anything like anywhere else.
There must be so many foods from other countries or locations that I see only on the television considering our warm climate . And in most cases we have a close “cousin” of the orignal. We have a sweet taste bud so that our Pizza sauce and spaghetti sauce is spicy/sweet. I was even surprised that pretzels in other countries is salty because ours is sweet tasting!!!But one food I guess that can never be grown close by is the APPLE (and cannot copy).
3. What is your favorite food from somewhere else?
I will go for strawberries which is grown mostly in the hinterlands of Baguio City and nearby provinces. I was still in college (20+ years ago) when a dorm mate brought us a basketful of freshly picked strawberries. We cleaned the fruits, added milk, a little sugar & ice cubes. It tasted so good!!!
I tried recreating the experience with my kids, I bought a pack of strawberries from the grocery, added milk, sugar and ice – they almost threw up. It was sooooo sour!!!
4. Share a family, ethnic or international recipe.
My father, was a very very good cook, and his special recipe was Calderetta. I never learned to cook that recipe because it had so many ingredients and so many steps. Goat’s meat was basically used but since this was hard to find he often used beef and ribs. His Calderetta was so good that it is worth all the waiting even to the last drop.
I have always wanted to try durian. I’ve heard it tastes like almond custard. The word pungent frightens me a bit. LOL
Is that a picture of the Durian? It looks so spiky on the outside.
Oops. Thanks for playing FFOF!
[...] Babet wishes she knew how to make her father’s Calderetta. She lives in the Phillipines and fruit called Durian grows in her area. [...]
So, does Durian smell BAD and taste GOOD? You wonder who the first brave soul was that gave it a try!
I wish we had sweet, fresh strawberries all the time. Some of the ones in the stores do not taste good.
