FSHM or Filipino Stay Home Moms joins the effort to help fellow orientals in learning and speaking English. A growing trend in the Philippine educational scenario is the increasing number of fellow Asians (ie Koreans, Malaysians, & Indonesians) in the local schools. And why are they here? Basically to learn to speak English. In addition, internet based English tutorials is also enjoying an increasing trend for foreigners who do not wish to come to the Philippines but still would like to learn.
Why the Philippines? English has been a part of the Educational curriculum for as long as I can remember. Most of us speak a local dialect and English. So that even if we are not English Majors many of us have the facility to speak English.
-
And stay home Moms are your best English tutors.
- Highly Educated - most of us completed our college degrees in the best Universities in the country
- Not Accented - Unlike other nationals, Filipinos can be easily understood because of the absence of an accent
- Intelligent and Patient - we must be!!! We completed our degrees, remember!! and we have children and are raising them.
- Experienced Teachers - All of us have been teachers in primary, young women and Relief Society classes, thus we have received countless training in class room instruction and class management
- Very small Class size - only 1 student…You!!
With high speed internet connection, the world becomes our classroom. We can help you learn to speak English by practicising with us without you leaving your homes. This will enable you to speak and write English with confidence. And since we live close to each other, there is slight difference in our time zones.
With a minimal fee, you can have a choice teacher. Please leave a comment on the type of teacher and best teaching time. So, to all our ASEAN neighbors we invite you to enrol.

It really has been a while since I played FFOF, I guess I got disoriented after our short trip to Cebu and with school opening activities. But I am happy to be back and besides I really like the questions of Valerie (valmg2) so that somehow I can “parade” something that is Filipino or Asian.
1. What is one food that is grown, produced or made near where you live.

Durian is grown in most southeast asian countries including here in Davao City. It is said to be the king of the fruits because it announces itself so strongly with its pungent smell. But it taste SO heavenly . . . really!! Perhaps it’s one of the few fruits that you need to have an “adjustment” period with.
2. What is one food from another location that you haven’t had anything like anywhere else.
There must be so many foods from other countries or locations that I see only on the television considering our warm climate . And in most cases we have a close “cousin” of the orignal. We have a sweet taste bud so that our Pizza sauce and spaghetti sauce is spicy/sweet. I was even surprised that pretzels in other countries is salty because ours is sweet tasting!!!But one food I guess that can never be grown close by is the APPLE (and cannot copy).
3. What is your favorite food from somewhere else?
I will go for strawberries which is grown mostly in the hinterlands of Baguio City and nearby provinces. I was still in college (20+ years ago) when a dorm mate brought us a basketful of freshly picked strawberries. We cleaned the fruits, added milk, a little sugar & ice cubes. It tasted so good!!!
I tried recreating the experience with my kids, I bought a pack of strawberries from the grocery, added milk, sugar and ice - they almost threw up. It was sooooo sour!!!
4. Share a family, ethnic or international recipe.
My father, was a very very good cook, and his special recipe was Calderetta. I never learned to cook that recipe because it had so many ingredients and so many steps. Goat’s meat was basically used but since this was hard to find he often used beef and ribs. His Calderetta was so good that it is worth all the waiting even to the last drop.

I have been working for almost year now as a web researcher and receive my salary through atm-payroll account. Since a letter has been specifically sent to the banking institution servicing our company that I was on a payroll account, I could not imagine them making a mistake on this, moreso that this is a computer generated task. A standard banking Rule is that your maintaining balance should not be lesser than Three Thousand Pesos otherwise the bank will deduct a service charge of 200 pesos at the end of the month. On the otherhand, payroll accounts need only 200 pesos as maintaining balance. In short I was deducted a total of 400 pesos (Transaction period: Jan-Jun 2008). I was instructed to go to the bank to inform them of the mistake!!! In otherwords, if you have not noticed those deductions then goodbye money.
The question that bugged me was that how many more unsuspecting people whose hard earned money are deducted from their accounts slowly and quietly and how much have these banking institutions “earned” through such anomalies transactions. My suggestion, particularly for payroll accounts, is to enroll your account through online banking so you can closely monitor your monies. Besides they have such good services that you can avail of such as Money Transfer, Payment of Bills, Easy Loans etc. Happy Banking!!

The past week has really been fantastic, I really am overwhelmed!!! Great, great friends whom I have lost touch with have communicated with me. And All this because of the internet. In an instant, I realized how blessed I have been because of these associations.
First it was Cindy, she was my daughters Stake Young Women President in Cagayan de Oro. A very talented and smart young lady. Her Mom( passed away) was my fellow counselor in the Relief Society. So we were frequently in each others homes. Cindy is now living in Tuguegaro with husband and now she is also a Mom. Congrats Cindy. We left Cagayan de Oro together in 2005.
Next Naomi, she wrote my daughter (Valerie) through Friendster. and eventually wrote me after asking for my email. Isn’t it great. The last time I saw her was in Ozamis City (1996) twelve years ago!!!and she was always backriding on his cousin’s motorcycle (or was it a bicycle?). She also, has such a beautiful voice, if I am not wrong, she used to be the lead vocalist of the Institute’s band!! . Her Tita Linda was my Visiting Teaching Companion and what a great companion she was.
Naomi has 2 kids (no picture yet) and lives in Houston, Texas as an ICU nurse. I really admire this young lady. She said she works only on weekends, while her husband works during the week. She would rather care for her young children personally than leave them to someone else. She could have done otherwise but instead chose for the weightier and more important things in life, Her FAMILY.
Then last Monday, I read an offline message from a dear dear friend of long ago. It was also through the maze of the internet that I was able to communicate with Meng. There were three of us young Moms: Luz, Meng and myself in our Tetuan Ward (Zamboanga Stake) in the later part of the 80s and we were the best of friends. We were in each others homes, kitchens and in each others affairs. The three of us were often “quieting down’ our babies at the back of the chapel and we even shared each others maternity dresses!!!. I remember, Luz’ toddler pulling me down and telling me that I was using her Mom’s Maternity clothes (which I remember was really mine and had shared it with Luz - ha ha ha).
We went our separate ways a few years later - My family went to Ozamis, Meng went to Manila and Luz stayed in Zamboanga. Looking back, I feely sorry that our children did not even become playmates even if they were together as babies.
We talked to each other yesterday after so many years, with tears of joy and gladness. It seems a part of me has lit up. I am so happy for Meng and for the wonderful kids that she has raised so valiantly.

From Jason and Kay Celine’s journal,
Each day the leaders would tell us every morning to find a quiet spot and read scriptures…
We had games and Skits and we showed our different talents…
by the 2nd day …morning we went on a hike some survive some didn’t then we had games and have devotional…. its a lot of fun because some of us participated in almost every activity the leaders asked us…

Rhinoplasty is basically a nose job. The featured case is a rhinoplasty of a young and healthy lady performed by Dr. John Helinski of San Diego. Her concerns were the symmetry of her nose, excessively pointed nasal tip, and the over projection of the nasal tip. The procedure performed included an open septorhinoplasty and her nasal tip diassembled and assembled to achieve a more beautiful effect.

I just could not control my elation that my Real Age is YOUNGER than my calendar age!!! According to the test I am younger because:
- No breast cancer in the family
- Parents lived together longer
- Non-smoker
- Have people to turn to
- Eat fruits
- And doing some cardio activity
On the other hand the result reminds me to use less of unhealthy fats, increase strength training, add more veggies into my diet and sleep earlier!!!. There are other areas that I can improve on. Why dont’t you take the test yourself and know your Real Age(http://www.realage.com/homepage.aspx)

I missed the previous questions particularly on the cheeses, because i am not a cheese lover and do not know anything about cheeses and because we are not a milk rich country. Today, I learned from Four Foods on Friday #27 that we are focusing on frozen foods. Again, we do not have frozen dinners (I think! - I have not seen any on the supermarket shelves). So I asked myself, will I continue on missing this fun blog!!! Definitely NOT !!! and realized that this is a wonderful way of sharing about foods in all parts of the world including our country.
#1. What brand of frozen dinners do you think are the best and why?
As I said we do not have frozen dinners unless frozen pizza counts!!! The closest thing to frozen dinner that we have would be frozen meat cuts - hotdogs, salami, ham, marinated chicken. marinated barbecue and one that appeals to my taste is the Monterey Meat. they have the best tasting barbecue
.
#2. What is your favorite frozen waffle or breakfast food?
I would rather mix my own waffles or hot cake because I have a large, large family. However, i also like commercially bought mixes because they are light and fluffy (no brand in particular).
#3. Frozen appetizers. Which one is your favorite?
Have not tried frozen appetizer. Usually, its a salad
#4. Share a recipe or meal made from at least one frozen food.
We have less of meats in our freezer and more of fishes particularly tuna. I like to marinate fish cuts in soy sauce and vinegar with powdered pepper. After a few minutes I coat it with flour or bread crumbs and deep fry. I match this recipe with saute’d vegetables.
CHALLENGE: Share a picture of either the inside of your refrigerator, freezer or cabinet
